The conceited man again raised his hat in salute. After five minutes of this exercise the little prince grew tired of the game' s monotony. "And what should one do to make the hat come down," he asked. But the conceited man did not hear him. Conceited people never hear anything but praise. "Do you really admire me very much?" he demanded of the little prince. "What does that mean......'admire'?" "To admire means that you regard me as the handsomest, the be st-dressed, the richest, and the most intelligent man on this planet." "But you are the only man on your planet!" "Do me this kindness. Admire me just the same." "I admire you," said the little prince, shrugging his shoulders slightly, "but what is there in that to interest you so much?" | "这可比拜访国王有趣多了。"小王子自忖。 想着，小王子又拍手。 自大者再度举帽回礼。 这动作持续做了五分钟，小王子就厌倦这种单调的游戏了。 "如何使你的帽子放下来呢？"他问道。 自大者置若罔闻。 矜夸自大的人们，除了逢迎赞美的话之外，什么也听不到。 "你真的仰慕我吗？"他问。 "仰慕......是什么意思？" "仰慕就是......你认为我是这个行星上最俊逸、衣冠楚楚、最富裕，且是最有智能的人。" "可是，你是这个行星唯一的一个人啊！" "别这样说嘛！ 你依旧可以仰慕我呀！" "好吧！太仰慕你了，"小王子无所谓地说："但你为什么对'仰慕'这样的感兴趣呢？" |
