While he was busy doing this, two men came and asked Sancho why he was robbing their master. They were the priest's servants. He answered that he was actingawfully, because his master, Don Quixote had beaten an enemy in battle. The servants did not understand this talk about knights and fighting, and did not think it was amusing. They knocked down Sancho, and kicked him until there was almost no breath in his body. This was the priest's chance to get on his mule again. He rode of f as fast as possible towards his companion, who was standing and watching from a good distance. They did not stay to see the end, but continued their journey together. Don Quixote Goes to the Carriage While this was happening, Don Quixote went to the carriage to talk to the frightened lady. "Beautiful and great lady," he said, "you are now free to do what you wish. Your cruel and wicked enemies are weak and helpless. My strength and bravery have beaten them. I am sure you want to know the name of the man who has saved you. I am called Don Quixot e de la Mancha, a knight-errant, servant of the beautiful lady, Dulcinea del Toboso. I ask only a small payment. Please go now to Toboso, and tell my queen that you have your freedom because of me." |
