Don Quixote imagined that the inn was a castle, and the inn-keeper a ruler; he thought the beggar-wom
en were great ladies. So it was easy to imagine that this was beautiful music. He thought the music was played to amuse him while he sat at table. He ate his supper, thinking that his first adventures
were very satisfactory.

A Promise Is Made

But something still troubled himnobody had yet made him a knight. So when he had finishe
d his supper, he took the inn-keeper into a room and shut the door.

Then Don Quixote knelt in front of him. He said, "I will not rise from my knees, brave knight, until you kindly do what I ask you. This will be a good thing to do, and will help all the people in the world."

The inn-keeper looked at the old gentleman kneeling on the ground, and speaking strange words. He did not kn
ow what to do or say. He asked him to rise, but Don Quixote refused. At last he had to promise.

"Sir, I was sure you would agree. Now let me tell you what I want. Tomorrow, when sun rises, you must make me a knight. To deserve this, I shall stay awake tonight.
