How Don Quixote Passes the Night Don Quixote thanked the inn-keeper for his kindness, and promised to obey him always. Then he got ready for the night's watch. Outside the inn there was a place for horses to drink. Into this he pu t his armour. Then, with his lance in his hand, he began to walk up and down. The inn-keeper had told everyone staying at the inn about the mad old gentleman. Soon a small crowd came to watch him. Everybody could see him easily because the moon was shining brightly. They saw him walking up and down with a calm face. Sometimes he stopped and stood, and looked seriously at his armo ur. Then one of the workmendecided that his mules needed water. He went to the drinking-place and, before putting water in it, he took out Don Quixote's armour. When he saw what the man was going to do, Don Quixote called loudly to him, "I do not know your name, brave knight, but take care what you do! That armour belongs to the bravest knight who ever used a sword. Do not touch it, or you will p ay for your foolish bravery with your life!" |
