每年1月5日或6日为农历节气——小寒，它与大寒、小暑、大暑、处暑一样，都是表示气温冷暖变化的节气。小寒的意思是天气已经很冷，开始进入一年中严寒的时段。根据气候观测资料表明，中国大部分地区从小寒到大寒这段时间的气温是全年最低的。

Every 5th or 6th day in January is the day of Slight Cold. Together with the terms as Great Cold, Slight Heat, Great Heat and Limit of Heat, Slight Cold is the term showing the changes in temperature, which means the weather is quite cold already and it is the beginning of the coldest days in the year. According to the meteorological observation data, the temperature between the day of Slight Cold and the day of Great Cold is the lowest in most parts of China.

        这时北京的平均气温一般在一5℃上下；东北北部地区的平均气温在—30℃左右；秦岭、淮河一线平均气温则在0℃左右；江南地区平均气温一般在5℃上下，虽然田野里仍是充满生机，但有冷空气南下时会造成一定危害。

The average temperature in Beijing in this period of time is around -5℃ and that of the northern part in the northeast China is about -30℃. The average temperature in areas along Qinling Mountain and the Huaihe River is 0℃ or so, and that in the south of the Yangtze River is around 5℃. Although the ground is covered with green vegetations in the southern areas of China, to some extent, it is still harmful when the cold air moves southward. 

        由于小寒时气温适宜，哈尔滨市于每年1月5日举办冰雪节，这个极具北方冰雪特色的主题活动每年都会吸引不少国内外游客。

There is an Ice and Snow Festival held in Harbin on Jan. 5th every year since the temperature around the day is low enough to keep the ice but not so cold to stop people from coming outside. This activity featured with ice and snow scene unique in the north attracts thousands of tourists every year from home and abroad.
