东北二人转
Er Ren Zhuan from the Northeast of China
Everywhere in the northeast of China, no matter it is in the fields of the urban areas, theatres in big cities, or even in Spring Festival Gala live broadcast on TV, you would always hear songs like this: "正月里来是新年呐，大年初一头一天呀。家家团圆会呀，少的老的来拜年儿呀...(the first month in the lunar calendar is for spring festival; on the first day, people get together for family reunions and exchange new year's greetings with each other)". It is a classicalepisode from the traditional folk art Er Ren Zhuan (song-and-dance duet) Pay New Year Calls in the Northeast. This form of art is pleasant to the ear, easy to learn and full of rhythm, and is also typical of the local manners and feelings. That's why it is called the "sound of the black land".
Er Ren Zhuan (song-and-dance duet) is a vigorous and lively art form, which, combines talking and singing, songs and dances. It has taken more than 300 years to evolve to its current form and developed various performing techniques. Er Ren Zhuan integrates a diversity of stage performances, such as mimicking, musical instruments playing, and traditional operas, and has gradually developed techniques of its unique characteristics including singing, talking, playing musical instruments, dancing, and stunts. Besides, performance costumes are innovative: some performers wear suit pants together with a Chinese styled vest and jacket; some wear Chinese tunic suit but put on a military cap of the Eighth Route Army; and some even dress themselves up with the Scottish kilts. All in all, peculiar costumes of all kinds will be seen in the Er Ren Zhuan show.
Although this special art form is called "duet", actually, it's not with only two performers. After its birth, Er Ren Zhuan has divided into three catalogues: Dan Chu Tou (one-person play), Er Ren Zhuan (two-people duet), and La Chang Xi (opera singing). In a Dan Chu Tou, there is only one performer who plays several roles. In an Er Ren Zhuan, the two performers will play several roles while telling stories, singing and dancing at the same time. A La Chang Xi is mainly a form of Northeastern folk opera which features a young femalecharacter and a comic character.
There are more than 300 traditional plays in this art, among which the most popular ones includeThe Blue Bridge,The West Chamber,Wang Erjie Misses Her Husband, andBreaking the Big Vat.
Many northeasterners in China are so crazy about Er Ren Zhuan that they are even willing to give up a meal for enjoying the show. Nowadays, this form of art has wide spread to the whole country and also brings a lot of fun to the audience.

虽名曰"二人转"，其实不仅限两人表演。这种艺术在诞生后不久，就演变出"单出头"、"二人转"和"拉场戏"三个分支。"单出头"是一个人一台戏，一人演多角；"二人转"是二人演多角，叙事兼代言，跳出跳入，载歌载舞； "拉场戏"则是以小旦和小丑为主的东北民间小戏。
