每年的9月7日或8日为白露节气，是九月的第一个节气。顾名思义，白露是气温渐凉、夜来草木上可见到白色露水的意思。据我国古籍说："八月节，阴气渐重，露凝而白也。"从气候规律看，白露时节，凉爽的秋风自北向南吹遍淮北大地，这时炎夏已逝，暑气渐消，我国大部分地区天高气爽，云淡风轻。，人们会明显地感觉到炎热的夏天已过，凉爽的秋天已经到来。
        像夏至、立秋等代表季节变换的节气一样，这一天有很多吃的习俗，有的只为尝鲜，有的则寄予健康的祝福。
        福州有个传统，"白露必吃龙眼"。民间的意思为，在白露这一天吃龙眼有大补身体的奇效，不管是不是真正大补，龙眼本身就有益气补脾，养血安神，润肤美容等多种功效，所以福州人也习惯了这一传统习俗。
        旧时苏浙一带乡下人家每年白露一到，家家酿酒待客，白露酒用糯米、高粱等五谷酿成，略带甜味，又称"白露米酒"。

White Dew

The White Dew, the first solar term in September, falls on the seventh day or the eighth day of September every year. Just as its name suggests, the White Dew means when the weather is getting colder, the white dews can be seen on trees and grass at night. It is said in the ancient Chinese books, "The Mid-Autumn Festival sees more cloudy days when white dews gradually show up." From the aspect of climate change, when the day of White Dew draws near, the cool autumn wind blows across the vast land on the north of the Huaihe River from north to south. The hot summer is gone and the summer heat is fading. In most parts of China, the sky is high, the air is clear, and the clouds are pale and a gentle breeze is blowing. People can obviously feel the bygone of hot summer days and the coming of the cool autumn.

Just as on the days of Summer Solstice and Beginning of Autumn, there are also many eating customs on the day of White Dew. Some are for a taste of fresh food in season and others are for expressing blessings to good health.

People in Fuzhou carry on the tradition of "eating longans on the day of White Dew". It is said that eating longans on this day would benefit the body greatly. Whether it is real or not, the longan itself has many functions of building up the vital energy, nourishing the blood, tranquilizing the mind, nourishing the skin and beautifying one's look. That's why the people in Fuzhou have observed this custom till now.

In the past, families in rural Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces used to make wine to treat their guests when White Dew came. The wine for the White Dew is made from the five cereals such as glutinous rice and sorghum. It has a slight sweet taste and is also called "White Dew Rice Wine".
