九九重阳节 The Double Ninth Festival
农历九月初九是中国一个重要的传统节日——重阳节。之所以叫"重阳节"，是因为古代人认为"九"是阳数，九月初九这一天两个阳数相重，所以叫"重阳节"。
The ninth day of the ninth lunar month in China is an important traditionalfestival — the Chong Yang Festival or Double Ninth Festival. In ancient China, number "9" was thought to be of Yang, meaning masculine or positive. The ninth day of the ninth month creates double Yang on the day and thus is named "Chong Yang (Chong meaning double)".
在古代，重阳节人们有登高的习俗。重阳节正值金秋九月，秋高气爽，登高望远既能欣赏秋季美景，又能强身健体。重阳节正值菊花盛开的季节，因此古代重阳节还有赏菊、饮菊花酒的习俗。菊花在古代有长寿花之称。将菊花与粮食共同酿造成酒，常饮菊花酒据说能够延年益寿。
In ancient time, people used to climb mountains on this day. Autumn in September, when sky is clear and air is crisp, climbing mountains not only gives a wonderful view of the autumn sceneries, but also provides a good chance to strengthen the body. It is also a season when chrysanthemums bloom; therefore, for the ancient Chinese, there was also a custom of enjoying chrysanthemums and drinking chrysanthemum wine on the day. Chrysanthemums represented longevity in the past, and the wine made from chrysanthemums and certain grains was said to be able to prolong one's life.
重阳节在九月九日，"九九"与"久久"谐音，"九"在数字中又是最大的，有生命长久、健康长寿之意。因此到了近代，重阳节这一传统节日又有了新的节日内涵——敬老、爱老。1989年我国把农历九月九日定为"老人节"，在全社会倡导尊老、敬老、爱老、助老的社会风气。每到这一天，各地都会慰问看望高寿老人，组织各种丰富多彩的活动庆祝老人们的节日，不少家庭的晚辈也会陪伴年老的长辈到郊外活动。
In Chinese, "九九(jiǔ jiǔ)" and "久久(meaning a long time)" sound the same, and "nine" is the biggest digit number, so "九九" indicates longevity and health. Hence, recently, the Double Ninth Day has become an occasion to pay respect to the old. In 1989, the Chinese government decided the Double Ninth Festival as Seniors' Day, encouraging people to respect, take good care of and love the seniors around the country. Every year on this day, all government units, organizations and streets communities will organize various activities for the old people. Younger generations will also bring elder ones to suburban areas on this day.
