Awakening Insects(惊蛰: Jing Zhe)
March 5, 2009 is the day of awakening insects. The day of awakening insects is the third solar term in spring. It usually comes between March 4 and March 7.
Thunder begins to appear after the day of awakening insects all over China. Zhe (蛰) means to hide. The sound of thunder awakens all kinds of hibernating insects which are hiding in the soil. Their eggs also begin to hatch. In fact, what really makes insects wake up is not the loud sound of thunder, but the increasing temperature in the soil.
During the time around the day of awakening insects, red peach flowers and white plum flowers are blooming, yellow warblers are singing and swallows are coming back. It is time for spring farming in most places in China. Therefore, the day of awakening insects vividly reflects the natural phenomena of that time.
