The Phonemic Alphabet: A Poster
Print out this poster of the phonemic alphabet at the end of the page and use it to help your students remember the phonemic alphabet. Below is a pronunciation activity idea.
Title: Silent letters Aim:To show how spelling and pronunciation don't always correlate in English. Therefore how important it is to know the phonetic script. Level: Late elementary or pre intermediate students Activity type: Warmer (speaking and writing)
Procedure:
Give students 5 words written in the phonemic script. If they aren't sure of all the sounds give them a chart to follow. You need to choose words that have silent letters, e.g. comb, right, daughter, where and through.
In groups of 2 or 3,students have to first work out what the word is and then write it correctlyidentifying the silent letters.
Give students a few minutes to do this and then stop the activity and check their answers.
Follow up:
If there's time students can think of their own examples.
