PHONOLOGY: Word Stress
These are not exactly rules, only tendencies
1.Nouns or adjectives with two syllables
father table handy cupboard silly
RULE:Stress the first syllable
2.Verbs with two syllables
revise presumeperceiveendure invite
RULE:Stress the second syllable
3.Words ending in:
-oo shampoo-oon tycoon -ette cassette-ain ascertain -eer engineer-ique technique -esque picturesque -sce convalesce -ee refugee
RULE:Stress the last syllable
4.Words ending in:
-ion occasion-ish accomplish -id insipid-ic characteristic
RULE:Stress the syllable before the suffix
5.Words of three syllables or more
university particular congratulate attitude
RULE:Third syllable from the end
6.Words like:
record importreject protest contract
RULE:If it is a noun stress the first syllable. If it is a verb the second
7.Composite words
doorhandle blackboard crossword railroad
RULE:First part of the word is stressed
8.Debatable words
controversy comparable cigarette innovative
RULE:Because of the differences of American and British pronunciation the stress is debatable
