Ask the children to look at the learning outcomes for the lesson – you may explain what they are going to learn in Chinese.

Divide the class into three groups. Each group should be given the name of a child: Tom, Dai Lisi and Xiao Hong. While they are watching the movie they should make a note of the food and drink that child has.

We're going to watch a movie. While we watch you have a task.

Waiter:  Here's the menu. What would you like to eat?
Xiao Hong:  Can I have chicken and rice, please?
Tom:   Can I have a hotdog and some soup, please?
Dai Lisi:  Can I have a hamburger, please?
Waiter:  Certainly and what would you like to drink?
Xiao Hong:  Can I have some juice, please.
Tom:   Can I have some water, please.
Dai Lisi:  Can I have a glass of milk, please.
Waiter:  So that's one chicken and rice, one hotdog with
soup and one hamburger.
Xiao Hong:  Yes.
Waiter:  And to drink, one juice, one milk and one glass of water.
Xiao Hong:  Yes, that's right

(empty plates in front of students)

Xiao Hong:  Let's ask for the bill.
Dai Lisi:  Waiter!
Waiter   Can I help you?
Dai Lisi:  Can we have the bill please.
Waiter:  Certainly.

Waiter:  That's 45 RMB
Dai Lisi:  Here you are.
Waiter:  Thank you.

Feed back on what the different children had to eat and drink. Put words and pictures on the board.

Give out worksheet 1. Tell the children that they must make a menu. They can choose what food and drinks to put on the menu. If they don't know some words, they can ask you or use a dictionary.

Watch the movie again. This time group 1 listens for the language that they use to ask for food, group 2, the language the waiter uses, group 3 the language they use to ask for the bill.  Feedback and then with the whole class talk about the language the waiter uses when he gives them the bill.

Waiter's question - Here's the menu. What would you like to eat?
Ask for food - Can I have ......................, please?
Ask for the bill - Can we have the bill please
Waiter's reply - Certainly.

In groups of 4, get the children to role play the waiter and guests using the menus they have made.  When they finish, they can change roles and do it again.

Give the guests a menu and ask what they want to eat.
When they ask for the bill give it to them.
