老子 道德经 第二十六章 英译
【原文】
重为轻根,静为躁君。
是以君子终日行不离静重。虽有荣观,燕处超然。奈何万乘之主,而以身轻天下?
轻则失根,躁则失君。
【现代汉语】
纯朴持重能抑制恣意放纵,静定能抑制浮躁。
因此圣人一贯秉持纯朴厚重与静定,尽管有奢华生活的诱惑,却能不为所动,泰然安于清静恬淡的生活。可身为大国的君主,却不能摆脱声色物欲,恣意放纵,而轻视怠慢国家和百姓。
放纵贪欲就会失去根本,浮躁就会失去君子的本色。
【英译】
Discreet and still attitude can
restrain self-indulgent and
fickle behavior.
So the sages always persevere in keeping their heart
discreet and still. They live
leisurely and
undisturbed even though there is luxury life to enjoy.
But, the emperor of big country can not get rid of greed, and despises his country and people.
In frivolity and greed, the root of personality is lost; in hasty and
fickle action, self-mastery is lost.
