I made a detour from the well-known Tianlong Tunpu (Military Outpost) and went directly to the Yunshantun, which was the hidden treasure known by few people. With the guidance of the local farmers, and after traveling in zigzag for quite a long time, we finally got to this old village halfway up the hill.
Yunshantun is listed as one of the four biggest military outposts in Guizhou province, enjoying equal popularity with the famous Tianlong tunpu. They are both built by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty (reign from 1368 to 1398) for the purpose of stabilizing his regime. They were with the same time-honored simplicity and dignity, and took on a rich Ming style. But Yunshantun preserved more plainness and originality due to the lack of commercial development and publicity.
Loaded with a heavy backpack, I followed the stone steps all the way up, with the scorching sun overhead and rape flowers blooming wildly by my sides. When I entered the village, dusk almost fell. The military outpost was quiet, with a small and long crooked slate path running between the stone houses on both sides, linking the life of every ordinary household. An aunt selling bean jelly at the foot of the walls stopped me, "It's hot. How about having a bowl of bean jelly before going on?" I smiled and said that I would return later. There was no need to hurry, for my life in this village had just started.
The backpack was getting heavier and heavier, so I decided to settle down. I turned and entered a house and found an elder sister busy in the backyard. I asked, "I'd like to put up. Can I live in your home?" She took a puzzled look at me and asked, "Only you?" "Yes." I answered. "Then come with me. You can live in my daughter's room." I was arranged in a little stone room full of sunshine.
I was really tired. Unloading the backpack, I crawled under my quilt covered with sunshine and had a good sleep. When I opened my eyes, I heard the clear chirp of birds rather than the horn of cars. A bee accidentally intruded this boudoir and chanted its buzz in a gentle voice. The setting sun had dyed every corner in this small room with a golden color. I took my camera and decided to go for a stroll.
The village was of extreme tranquility. The setting sun has dressed all the stone houses and trees in golden yellow, and the old villagers were taking care of their grandchildren and chatting in front of their own houses. When they saw me, a stranger, they just gave a kind smile. The stone steps rose up and down according to the terrain, and I didn't noticed that I had come to another gate of the village. Old trees shaded the entrance to the village with mountains on both sides. The dilapidated walls from the Ming Dynasty on either side of the outpost linked cliffs and blockaded the major road to the village. It winded on the top of the mountains on both sides and surrounded this quiet little village in its arms. The once formidable walls were already in ruins, and the dust of time had changed all the past greatly, except the flowers in a pear tree blooming like a piece of brocade; it guarded this place year in and year out.
Outside the gate was a stretch of golden sea. Sitting by the roadside in front of a tiny temple housing the village god, listening to the clear twitters, and seeing the gray old walls against the golden rape flowers, I was actually at a loss of the time and date in the trance.
The sky was getting dark, and I returned to the elder sister's house. I was surprised to find that all the family were waiting for me for supper. The elder sister said that they didn't know where I went and had looked for me in the village for a great while. Sitting around the stove, she and her family chatted with me with heavy accent. They kept urging me to eat more and said I should feel at home.
The night air was as cold as water in the dim and quiet village with brilliant stars in the sky overhead. In the simple but warm stone room still having the smell of sunshine, I fell asleep.
