The 16th Asian Games, Guangzhou
The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, is a multi-sport event among athletes from all over Asia, held every four years as the Olympic Games and the World Cup. In 2004, Guangzhou succeeded in its bid for the Asian Games. After six years of preparation, Guangzhou is now welcoming athletes and visitors from all around the world to the 16th Asian Games held here.
The official emblem of the Guangzhou Asiad is shaped like a torch or the sculpture of the five rams. The torch symbolizes a sacred and forever burning torch of the Asiad, while the five rams represent the city as it's also named the "ram city", expressing the fine aspirations of the people in Guangzhou.
The official mascots of the Guangzhou Asian Games are five fashionable rams doing sports, respectively named Le Yangyang, A Xiang, A He, A Ru and A Yi, which together makes the Chinese phrase, "祥和如意乐洋洋"(lucky, peaceful, wishful, happy). Le Yangyang leads the other four rams striding forward, representing the people in Guangzhou embrace the grand occasion with high, optimistic, and enterprising spirit, and conveys the idea of "harmony and passion" of this Games.
