Urban Handkerchief Users: Seek Childhood Memories and Return to Green Life
"Fewer facial tissues, more real handkerchiefs". In Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities, the number of handkerchief users is increasing among young people. An obvious sign of this group of people is that they prefer to carry a handkerchief every day. Handkerchiefs have bought them back to their childhood and guided them near to green life.
"Handkerchief users", as the name indicates, refers to the people who like to use handkerchiefs and care for environmental protection. Li Ting, a student in Fudan University, is a handkerchief user who carries a handkerchief everywhere. Li Ting really misses the time when everyone used a handkerchief, "When I went to kindergarten in my childhood, our teacher used to inspect to see if we brought our handkerchiefs with us. Nowadays, more and more people use facial tissues and nearly no one uses real handkerchiefs anymore."
The reason why Li Ting began to use handkerchief again is an environmental protection research.
Zero Research and Consulting Company carried an investigation on residents in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xian, Wuhan and Chengdu in 2009. The result showed that 96.6% people used facial tissues in the previous week. Each person would use 10.1 pieces of facial tissue every day on average in the survey.
The big consumption of facial tissues brings new burden to the earth every day, while few people use real handkerchiefs which are more convenient and environment friendly. In the summer of 2009, Li Ting and her classmates began to use handkerchiefs. Some classmates even contacted some handkerchief factories in Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province and ordered handkerchiefs and clothes bags in various patterns and colors to sell on internet. Quite unexpectedly, this small action aroused much attention. More than 20 handkerchiefs are sold every day.
"What were popular many years ago now come back to our life again." Li Ting thinks that the handkerchiefs in her shop can meet the needs of young people in terms of color and pattern and the price is much less expensive than those in a brand shop since a handkerchief in her shop only costs between 5RMB to 10 RMB.
