Before celebrating her 30th birthday on April 6 this year, Sun Wen began studying at a university in Shanghai. She had previously made a request to the governing body of women's football in China to retire from the China team. However, when asked by China coach Ma Liangxing, she came back to the team which she had served for 13 years.
"Football has fulfilled my dream. I still remember the exciting moment when I made my first World Cup goal in the match against Denmark at the inaugural 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup hosted in Guangzhou. I was 18 then." |
| Sun Wen is one of women's football's most brilliantfigures who will go down in the history of both the FIFA Women's World Cup and women's football. She participated in all the past three FIFA women's World Cups and played the role of the soul of the China team. Her uniqueability to score and skillfulpossession of the ball has gained her an internationalreputation.
"Sun Wen is a very talented player," said runner-up of FIFA player of the year of 2002, Birgit Prinze. "She is a good passer with special vision and great control. When she has it, it is hard to get the ball off her even though you might think you have."
In the 1996 Olympic Games, Sun Wen led her team through to the finals, where they were beaten by their arch-rivals, the USA, and finished runners-up. In the last 1999 Women's World Cup, she and her teammates were again runners-up.
