"Despite their brilliant performances, there are many aspects they can improve on - their mental approach, and positional play to name a few. They also need to be deadlier in front of the goal." Six months' coaching has helped Haan to find the Achilles' heel of the China team. "They need more internationalexposure to find their mistakes, and they have to learn from their mistakes."
When Arie Haan was set to shift his team into top gear, China was hit by the SARS outbreak and all the planned China team friendlies were consequentlypostponed, including the Far Eastern Four-team Tournament (China, Hongkong, Japan and Korea) due to be hosted in Japan in early June.
"The biggest difficulty for my team is lack of games in which they can gain both experience and confidence." Haan is looking forward to the 2003 Asian Cup being hosted in China, "It will be a good chance for me to learn about our rivals, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia or Iran."
