★ We have been to every other city besides Tokyo.

除了到过东京，我们还到过其它所有的城市。

此句不能译作:"除了东京之外，其它的城市我们都到过了。"如要表达此意，应该说:

We have been to every other city than Tokyo.

介词besides的涵义是in addition to，as well as(除了...还...)；而连词than在后一句中表示except的意思，即:"除了(没有)...之外...都"。因此，上面两个句子的涵义是大不相同的。再请看下面的类例:

They have harvested the peanuts besides the rice.

除了收获稻子，他们还收了花生。

比较： They have gathered all the crops except peanuts.

除了花生还没收，他们把全部农作物都收割好了。

We have received other presents besides letters.

除了收到一封信，我们还收到了其它的礼物。

比较： We have received presents other than letters.

我们所收到的是礼物而不是信。



besides在不同的句子中，可以表达不同的涵义。有时候，它的意思是"除了...， (尚有...)"；有时候却表示"除了...之外，(不再有...)"。比较下列两个句中besides 的不同涵义:

The new-type computer has many other advantages besides lower cost.

除了成本较低，这种新型的计算机还有许多其它的优点。

We have no other computers besides this giant general-purpose transistorized digital one.

除了这台晶体管大型通用数字计算机之外，我们没有别的计算机了。

为什么besides会表示两种截然不同的涵义呢？因为besides这个字用于否定句(如上句)和疑问句时，与except同义，作"除了...之外，(不再有...)"解。例如:

I've no dictionaries besides these two.

除了这两本外，我没有其它的词典了。

I care for nothing besides this.

除了这个以外，我什么都不要。

What has he done, besides reading the report?

除了阅读这份报告之外，他还干了一些什么呢？

还有一点应当在此指出，besides用作介词时，其后可以接名词、从句、动名词、此外尚可接不带"to"的动词不定式(但它前面的动词必须是"do")。例如上面最后一个例句可以改写为:

What has he done besides read the report？
