In this first unit, we will learn about the need for clarity and simplicity in business communications in general and Messenger conversations in particular.
Before you begin, think about your own experience. Have you ever used a messengerprogram to communicate with colleagues? Has there ever been a miscommunication or a misunderstanding? What happened? How could it have been avoided?
Also think about these questions:
·How formal or informal should the language be? ·How do you know someone is done 'talking'? ·How do you know when you should respond? ·When shouldn't you respond? ·What do you do if you have a lot to say in one turn? ·What do you do if you make a mistake?
Now, look at the beginning of an online meeting below. This is an excerpt of a weekly meeting between members of a company who work at different locations. What misunderstandings happen? How could they have been avoided?
Questions to think about:
Does Bob do a good job as chairman? How could he do a better job? What is confusing about the conversation?
