SEQUENCES
"Series vocabulary" helps learners pick up English words that are commonly used in everyday activities. This activity lasts around 5 to 10 minutes and works best with intermediate students.
Procedure
Before class, choose an area of life that involves a sequence of events, e.g. making a phone call or going shopping. Choose the level of vocabulary involved in the theme, for example, going for a walk in winter, at elementary level.
First put on your coat, then turn the lights off. Next go out of the front door.
Or at a more advanced level
First you get out a detailed street map and decide where to go. Next you get well wrapped up.
Then in class set the topic by bringing in some pictures, objects or sounds. For example if starting a car is your theme, bring in a tape of a car engine turning over.
1. Ask the learners to mime the sequence to each other so that it is well established in their minds.
2. In a circle, ask one person to start the sequence with the words First I.... and the next person to continue with Then I...or Next I....
3. If you think all the words are likely to be new, then do one step each lesson, building up little by little. For example, wrapping a present: the first lesson might be, First I choose something nice. Then the second time you'd get someone to remember step one before going on to step two, Next I get some wrapping paper.
