One of the keys to giving effective feedback is to listen actively. What does that mean? Active listening is based on:
·Concentrating on what your boss, peer or subordinate is trying to say ·Not your own feelings or ideas ·Listening to what they are describing, such as situations, facts, events and other information ·Their feelings and emotions behind what they are saying ·The emphasis or importance of the information ·Their body language and your responding to this
Feedback is not always easy to give or receive. Everyone needs to be open and honest and this is one of the most difficult things about it. People might feel that feedback is negative and unhelpful, that another person will not like them or that it is too risky. People feel uncomfortable and there are many places where communication can break down. |
