Rich can mean having a lot of money and possessions but also vivid colours or food full of flavour are described as rich. Likewise poor is also used to describe bad light and food or unproductive land.


FORMAL

John is a prosperous farmer. He has been very successful.

The shoes may be cheap but they will fall apart in a week. Look at the shoddy workmanship.

The prisoners had to survive on the meager rations of bread and water.

I spend all my wages and at the end of the month I am penniless.



INFORMAL

I know you are loaded. How about lending me a couple of quid!

He is a fat cat from Shanghai. He is made of money.

Since she won the lottery she has had money to burn.

She is very well heeled as she comes from an affluent family.



COLLOQUIAL

I just won some money on a horse race so I am feeling flush!

I am destitute and nobody loves you when you are down and out.

Helen is beautiful but she is as poor as a church mouse.

He is dirt poor while she is filthy rich.
