Host:
Hello again and welcome to week two of our weekly audio show. Im your host Yu Dazhi, or you can call me Danny in English. Each week we will have different Chinese experts who will come on and talk about a weekly quesiton I have put forward to you
Our experts are Zhao Baobin, an English teacher, and also online learning expert, and Leo who is a graduate but is also an English learner.
Zhao Baobin: Hello, thank you for inviting me.
Leo : Hi, very happy to be here
Host:
This week we are going to talk about the difficulty Chinese learners face with grammar and time. As Chinese is often in the present, users forget to use the past in Chinese. Here we have two experts to give advice.
Zhao Baobin: You know, from experience, Chinese learners of English are grammar experts. Learners right through school are taught the mechanics of the English Language and have a good foundation in learning grammar. The difficulty is actually using that knowledge in everyday speech. Learners in the past have had little opportunity to practice, so problems still exist.
Host: Could you give an example?
Zhao Baobin: Sure. I eat my lunch, instead of I'm having lunch. Here we can see that learners still literallytranslate 'chu' to eat and also use the possessive, but in English we omit 'my'as it is naturally our lunch, it wouldn't be someone elses, unless you were greedy of course!
Leo: Hi, can I say something as well?
Host: Sorry Leo, go ahead.
Leo: I think that learning a language is never easy, and here are my top three tips to avoid mistakes:
1.When looking at expressions, try them out, but let yourself be corrected. 2.Try and find common mistakes that Chinese learners make and see if you do them yourself 3.Record yourself in conversation, this may be hard to do but ask a friend to secretly and then listen again. You will quickly notice any errors that you may be making!
Zhao Baobin: I couldn't agree more!
Host: Well that wraps it up for today, thank you to my experts and see you next week.
All: Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!
