Host: Hi,my name's Yu Dazhi, or my English name is Danny.I'm your host for Mind Your Language 3, the weekly show which highlights different problems and issues in English Language. As mentioned the other week, we're here to talk about Prefixes and Suffixes. To give some advice on this topic, I have two special guests with me. One is Bao Rui, a Education in Technology graduate, she is also an English learner, and Nie Zhi, more commonly known as Richard, he is an editor for the www.in2english.com.cn website. Welcome!
BR: Hi, Danny. I like your English name.
Host: Thanks.
Richard: Hi, really happy to be on this show.
Host: So I'd like to ask you Bao Rui, why you think suffixes and prefixes are important in learning vocabulary?
BR: Well, I know that when I study English, I try find meanings through roots. That doesn't mean through the trees, but rather throught the root of the word. A good example may be one in Chinese.
Host: Ok, what's that?
BR: Well think of the word 'dian'which means electricity and you have 'dianhua''dianshi''dianbingxiang'.It can be similar in English. While this is not a precise example, there is the prefix 'pre' which means before. So put it infront of the root and you have 'prehistoric' 'preliminary' 'pre-date' 'premeeting'
Host: Wow, Baob Rui, thanks for that, I see what you are saying. So you identify the key part of the word as it may give a clue for meaning?
BR: Right.
Richard: Yes, let me add something here about suffixes. The same can be said for endings. Lets look at an example.
Host: OK, go ahead.
Richard: The suffix is –port. This means to carry. So we have 'transport' , 'export', 'import','support'.
Host: Thanks Richard, that was really informative.
