Tiger Woods's Monday at Augusta National Golf Club began as peacefully as those recorded bird chirpings that CBS has played during its Masters broadcasts. At about 7 a.m., with the sun just beginning to filter through the Loblolly pines, he and Fred Couples wandered out to the club's new driving range, all but deserted at that hour, and hit balls for a leisurely half hour.
They laughed. They told stories. They involved their caddies, Steve Williams and Joe LaCava, and Mr. Woods's swing coach, Hank Haney, in the general feel-good moment.
Then they played a practice round, joined on the back nine by Jim Furyk, on a beautiful day warming into the 80s.
The fans, or patrons as Augusta National likes them to be called, gave Mr. Woods a warm but subdued reception. The most commonly voiced sentiments were 'Welcome back, Tiger!' and 'Good luck, Tiger.' For the record, the first call-out that Mr. Woods heard, as he was leaving the practice area for the course proper at 7:39 a.m., shortly after the gates opened to allow in fans, was a reference to a 20th-century sports icon: 'Greater than Ali, Tiger. Greater than Ali.'
Buoyed by such supportive shout-outs, and few if any negative ones, at 2 p.m. Mr. Woods, with a fresh goatee, bounded into the media-center interview room, shook hands with one green-jacketed member and hugged another, and took his seat behind a microphone on the dais. The next 35 minutes must have seemed like a victory to him. He made no obvious gaffes and answered, or seemed to answer, each of the 48 questions thrown his way by the 200 or so reporters in the room.
But he said, as he always does, that he thinks he can win: 'I'm looking forward to that first tee.'
