The duration of schooling in Thai university is different from that of China. The first semester lasts from June to September, and then follows the vacation which covers the whole October. The second semester begins in November and ends in early March next year, and then comes the three-month summer vacation.
When new students get enrolled in a university, an activity will be arranged for them to meet the old students and find a partner among them by drawing lots. It is a strict tradition in Thailand. The partnership will be sustained during their college years. Senior students enjoy absolute authority over the junior ones who will be in charged with the decoration work for the graduation ceremony.
Activities before graduation include: dinner with teachers and classmates of the department, taking graduation photos, waiting for the diploma conferred by the princess, party with teachers and junior students, and receiving congratulations from families and friends all around the country.
The graduation ceremony in my university was held on February 5th, 6th, and 7th. During the three days, the whole campus was immersed in cheerful laughter and happiness. Every university has its own graduation gowns and there are even specific demands about the girls' hair style. Junior students would prepare an evening party featuring the characteristics of their majors, and leaders of each department will arrange a gathering dinner for all the students. Students will also design a setting for taking graduation photos according to their major. For example, this year we Chinese department set up a background with images of dragons and phoenixes, while, the Japanese department made theirs a cherry tree. Junior students will dance for three days and send their best wishes to the graduates. Of course, relatives and friends of the graduates will also come from all over the country to the ceremony and present their blessings.
Waiting for the diploma conferred by the princess herself is a very important part. Besides, there is also a unique activity called BU M, in which the graduates and their teachers will be surrounded by the junior ones, who will then salute them, dance for them, and speak out their wishes to them. After that, the graduates are supposed to put some money into a box prepared in advance. Teachers will also be the main role in the BU M activity and actually anyone as long as he/she is in a graduation gown will have the chance to receive the BU M treatment. BU M is an auspicious ritual, and also a most glorious moment for a graduate. We Chinese department wrote "人之初,性本善 (man's nature at birth is good)" on the box for containing the gift money this year.
The beating of gongs and drums resounds to the sky during the three days. The campus is swarmed with cars and people. Students posing for the camera can be easily spotted in every corner of the campus.
In Thailand, a person may not get married in his life, but it is certain that he will go to school and graduate with an unforgettable graduation ceremony.
