An average of 108.4 million people watched the Baltimore Ravens defeat the San Francisco 49ers Sunday night in Super Bowl XLVII, the third-largest audience for a television event on record, according to CBS, which aired the football game.

The viewership figures exclude a half-hour period when the game was interrupted by a partial power outage at the Superdome, CBS said. The network continued to broadcast footage from the stadium during that time, but play was halted.

While viewership dipped slightly during the power outage, it recovered and continued to rise for the remainder of the game. The audience was largest in the final 17 minutes of coverage, when nearly 51% of households with televisions tuned in.

Super Bowl games hold the top three places for most-watched television events, with last year's attracting a record 111.3 million viewers. That was only slightly higher than the 111.0 million viewers for the 2011 Super Bowl, according to Nielsen.
