'How To Train Your Dragon' (Paramount) took in $20 million this weekend to narrowly edge out the super-hero movie 'Kick-Ass' for the top slot box office.

The comedy-adventure, co-starring 13-year-old Chloe Moretz in a breakout role as a costumed hero, took in $19.75 million, a difference of just $250,000, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com.

'Date Night' (Fox), an action-comedy with Tina Fey and Steve Carell, landed in third place with $17.3 million.

'Death at a Funeral' (Sony/Screen Gems), a remake of a British comedy that virtually no Americans saw, placed fourth with $17 million.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, praised Moretz via email, comparing her acting to that of Natalie Portman in her early role in the 1994 film 'Leon' (a.k.a. 'The Professional'). 'Chloe Moretz's hit girl begs audiences to suspend disbelief as this cute little kid uses the language of a truck-driver and handles weapons like a pro, while killing more people than Steven Seagal in his heyday,' said Dergarabedian.
