King Zhou of Shang was a tyrant resented by the common people. He broke the law with abandon and ignored public opinion while indulging in wine and women. King Zhou had a loyal official named Bi Gan who was very worried and tried to persuade King Zhou to change his behavior. Once, King Zhou listened to his favorite concubine and killed his innocent minister. After Bi Gan heard this news, he went to persuade King Zhou not to kill the innocent man claiming the state would be destroyed. King Zhou did not listen, but replied angrily, "I heard that the saint had seven apertures in his heart. I will kill you today and take your heart out to see if it's true." King Zhou then killed Bi Gan and removed his heart.
孔子说起这件事,感叹道:"纣王心窍不通,如果通了一窍,那么比干就不会被杀害了!"
When Confucius heard what had happened, he sighed, "King Zhou's mind was not open. If it was open, Bi Gan would still be alive!"
