本周是2月27日至3月04日历史上发生的事件。 | | March 1st is Wales's national day and the patron saint of the Welsh is St David. The national symbol of Wales is a leek, which is a vegetablerelated to the onion and garlic. The Irish have a shamrock, the Scottish a thistle and the English a rose. You can see one of these plants on the back of an English pound coin. The front of the coin has the queen's head but the reverse side could have any one of them. |
| Why a leek? Apparently in the battle of Heathfield in 633 the Welsh army put a leek in their caps to distinguish themselves from their Saxon enemies. A leek is a deliciousvegetable which can be cooked in a variety of ways. The daffodil is a yellow spring flower that is also used in lieu of the leek. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is one of the world's longest place names and has 58 letters. It is written in the Welsh language and means: "The church of St. Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St. Tysilio's of the red cave". It is a real place and you can find out more about on the Internet where its domain name is the longest one there!
