In an
exclusive interview to NDTV, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, has said that India is not in a race with China to extend its influence in the Indian Ocean region.
Over the last few years, both India and China have been aggressively adding new warships to their fleets.
The Navy chief also spoke about the recent
turmoil in Pakistan and what it means for India.
NDTV: How do you perceive the
turmoil in Pakistan. What are the implications for India?
Admiral Sureesh Mehta: Much of it is
internal to Pak and we only hope that they get back to a stable regime.
NDTV And a stable Pakistan is in India's interest?
Admiral Sureesh Mehta: Indeed, a stable Pakistan and
stability in this entire region is very important.
NDTV: Are we competing with the Chinese for influence in the region?
Admiral Sureesh Mehta: There is no such thing as competing for influence. Nations work in their national interest. It is in our national interest to do things in a particular manner. We need to make sure that our sea lanes are protected at all times, and to make sure that our oil comes in at the rate at which we want it to come in.
Similarly China has very
extended lines through which its oil has to flow, and they have to ensure that their oil supplies remain unhindered. And therefore as a
policy they are doing what they are doing.
