German Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev shake hands after a joint press conference at the Chancellery in Berlin.

(CCTV 06-06-2008 09:38)Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says he is worried about misunderstandings between Europe and Russia on several key issues. Medvedev's comments follow a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Medvedev says mutual understanding of Euro-Atlantic policies is shrinking. He says differences exist in a number of areas between Russia and Europe.

Dmitry Medvedev said, "Certainly there are problems left which we discussed, that is global and European security, including plans for the deployment of U.S. missile defense sites in Europe, the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty and NATO's expansion."

Medvedev emphasizes that Moscow enjoys close ties with Berlin. He says the decision to visit Germany first demonstrates Russia's priorities.

The Russian president also says he will work with Merkel to remove obstacles to the construction of a key gas pipeline. It would enable Russia to transport natural gas to Germany, bypassing Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States.
