(People's Daily 07-08-2008 17:14)--According to the Beijing Daily, the much-welcomed "Chinese Menu English Translation" has been in use for almost a month. But what is the actual situation
regarding this menu in city hotels and restaurants? On July 7, Zhou Shuqi, director of the Beijing Tourism Administration Restaurant Department, disclosed that over 800 star-rated hotels and restaurants in Beijing are now using this translated menu. When a Beijing Daily
reporter went to
investigate for himself, he saw that many Chinese food restaurants had begun using the English menu, but there were also some restaurants that still provided only oral translations of menus to foreign customers.
The new menu contains English translations for 2000 common Chinese vegetable dishes,
staple foods, snacks, desserts, and alcohol. This menu is strongly recommended for restaurant use but is not mandatory or enforced.
According to Zhou Shuqi, from June 12 until now, over 800 hotels have received and begun using the new translated menu with enthusiasm. At present, 300 one-star and two-star hotels in the city have already started making full use of the translated menu, along with over 110 star-rated restaurants and over 300 hotels rated three stars and above. 119 Olympic Hotels, including Beijing Hotel and Gloria Hotel, are also among them.
