MANILA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Philippine president's husband is already out of critical condition after he experienced stomach cramps Friday night on board the presidential charter flight, which made an emergency stop-over in Japan, Philippine media reported Saturday.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Mr. Arroyo had a "intense stomach pain", when he was flying with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and top government officials on a chartered Philippine Airline plane to Peru for the APEC leader's meeting.
Mr. Arroyo returned to Manila Saturday afternoon after doctors in Japan gave him clearance for flying after confirming that the 62-year-old First Gentleman was in stable condition and out of immediate danger.
Mr. Arroyo was rushed to St. Luke's Medical Center in the Philippine capital for further treatment upon his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
A government statement released at predawn Saturday and relayed by local media said Mr. Arroyo suffered from "stomach cramps and back pains." It said doctors on board the chartered plane decided on an emergencylanding because Mr. Arroyo exhibited the same symptoms as before he underwent a heart surgery in 2007.
Mr. Arroyo's cardiologist, Dr. Antonio Sibulo earlier told local TV channel ANC that though in stable condition Mr. Arroyo is clearly at risk for the next five years. "The possibility [of recurrence of heart attack] is still very high," he said.
President Arroyo and most of the accompanying officials pushed forward their Lima trip Saturday morning after learning that the First Gentleman is in stable condition.
