BMW says it is recalling about 8,080 of its 5-Series sedan and Gran Turismo models built between Jan. 12 and July 1 to fix a fuel-level sensor. BMW began selling the Gran Turismo late last year and rolled out the 5-Series sedan this spring.
The company says the sensor could overstate the
amount of
gasoline in the tank. The problem could result in drivers
running out of gas when the
needle on the gauge indicates there is plenty remaining.
In many ways our cars have become so electronically
advanced and
complicated that it can be difficult to
comprehend their inner workings. However, fuel gauges still work as you might expect. A small
mechanicaldevice inside the tank moves as the fuel level changes, kind of like the float systems found in
toilet tanks and
old-fashioned carburetors.
In BMW's case a moving part could get stuck against the wall of the tank, keeping it from moving as the fuel level falls. While modern fuel gauges generally work electronically, they often rely on sensors that are
partlymechanical.
The German car maker says it knows of no accidents or injuries resulting from the problem, and that the recall is
voluntary. A BMW
spokesman says the company found out about the
potential flaw through its own testing and told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about it.
