A report released Monday by a cycling advocacy group said that the number of New Yorkers who used a
bicycle on a daily basis climbed by 28% to 236,000 last year.

The report released by the Manhattan-based Transportation Alternatives said 2009 marked the city's fourth straight
annual increase in biking. The group reports that 60% of bike trips ended below 59th Street in Manhattan, followed by 15% in Brooklyn and 13% in Queens.

More and better bike lanes have propelled the rise in cycling, the group said.

Last year, the city created close to 89 miles of bike lanes in areas such as Columbus Circle in Manhattan, Sands Street in DUMBO and Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, said Wiley Norvell, a spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives. In December of last year, the city also passed a law intended to
expand the number of secure parking spaces for bikes. (An added plus for cyclists: Since March, Google Maps has been
offeringbicycle directions in New York, among other cities).

executive director.

In some cases, the city's
expansion has come with its share of
conflict. At least one future bike lane
expansionproject is already hotly argued. And many cyclists' habit of ignoring
traffic laws drives more than a few people crazy.

Bucking the trend is the city's population of bike messengers. From 1990 to 2005, the number of messengers in New York fell from 7,000 to 2,500, the report said. It did not include 2010 figures, but industry experts said the number of messengers has been dwindling for some time, due to the rise of the Internet and digital
delivery. The economic downturn may have also accelerated that process.
