European regulators allowed some airports to reopen Tuesday, even as pilot groups and scientists called for more caution before putting planes back into European skies clouded by volcanic ash.

Airports in Scotland and northern England reopened Tuesday. A spokesman for airport operator BAA Ltd. said its airports in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen had opened, but its other airports-London's Heathrow and Stansted, and Southampton-remain out of action. Germany and France were expected to reopen airspace later in the day.

Britain's National Air Traffic Services agency said late Monday that flying conditions were 'worsening' in some areas. 'The volcanoeruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the U.K.,' the air-trafficagency said in its latest update.

Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa AG will operate about 200 flights Tuesday, including most of its scheduled long-haul flights, a spokeswoman said. Selected domestic and European flights will also run, she added. Aviation officials, however, warned it could take several days for airline operations to return to normal and it remained unclear how much airspace will remain restricted.
