China's Ministry of Education says its demographic structure of teachers is improving.
At present, more people from China's 55 ethnic
minority groups have joined their Han counterparts in becoming teachers. The Ministry also confirms that teachers from ethnic
minority groups have become pillars in education within their regions.
Statistics published by China's Ministry of Education show that the number of teachers from ethnic
minority groups at all levels has exceeded 930,000. More than 40,000 of them are teaching in higher education institutions. This is a 4-fold increase compared with 10 years ago.
The number of teachers from ethnic
minority groups with a 4-year university
diploma is increasing rapidly. In higher education institutions, more than one third of teachers hold a master's or even a doctorate degree.
In the past, the range of courses that these teachers taught was very narrow. Most of them only taught languages, history or the arts of their own ethnic groups. Now, the courses they are
offering cover almost all major areas of natural and social science. Outstanding scholars from ethnic
minority groups are contributing to the
advancement of medical science,
biologicalengineering, information technology as well as
mathematics and physics.
At present, more than 30 ethnic
minority groups are boasting their own professors, deans and even college presidents.
