The 90-minute
architectural river
cruise that leaves from Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive is the absolute best way to spend your
tourist time and money. The Chicago Architecture Foundation offers
cruises from April through November. The guides are entertaining and informed, the ride is fun and
educational, and there is no better introduction to what makes Chicago Chicago - stunning skyline on a sparkling waterfront.
Millennium Park, just south of Michigan Avenue, is the crown jewel of a city that takes pride in public spaces. Walk across the undulating
bridge designed by Frank Gehry. Better yet, listen to a concert under his
metallic band shell. During the summer, you can
frolic under the digital-age Crown Fountain, which consists of twin monoliths that project images of
everyday Chicagoans.
Chicago is the
birthplace of improvisational
comedy. But if Second City is too mainstream - or, more likely, sold out - check out the NeoFuturists.
Weather permitting, a
leisurely run, a walk, rollerblading or a bike ride on the lakefront esplanade is a must. Head south where it's less
crowded. The views around the museum campus are unparalleled.
Window shop along the Magnificent Mile, especially if it's December and the bright lights are out. All the brand-name stores - Tiffany, Nordstrom, Apple, Crate & Barrel - are along the avenue. But the most interesting shops are found
indoors, at the
vertical malls like the Westfield North Bridge, where you'll find an entire store
devoted to olive oil, a chocolate
lounge and an
unusually satisfying food court.
