She was the hottest girl in town. Her name is Ruhua. Men paid handsomely to have the privilege of
touching her hand. Zhenbang, the son of a rich family, was her lover boy. Rejected by Zhenbang's parents, their love ended
hopelessly and the two lovebirds
decided they could only find eternal love after death. One night, they appeared in their best
attire and drank spoonful of opium with wine. Fifty years later, just one day before the
anniversary of their death, she returns as a ghost to honor her promise made before leaving the world: to reunite with her lover.
Unlike other blood and gore ghost movies, this one depicts Ruhua as a faithful wasted beautiful woman. She dresses in an
exquisitely tailored Qipao. Her
delicately powdered face and rouged lips fail to disguise her emptiness and
eagerness to rekindle a lost romance. She is an
elegant sad woman. She is a ghost roaming deserted streets after dark.
Luckily she meets a kind but
suspicious guy working for a newspaper after she figures the best chance she has to find her lover is to run an ads on the local newspaper. Penniless, she is
politely rejected by the newspaper guy, but she arouses his curiosity and
compassion. With his help, Ruhua stays in his place and continues her search. Everything has changed, and Hong Kong is not what it was like half a century ago. As each day passes by, Ruahua pushes herself closer on the verge of
desperation. She fears sunlight, but she is more scared of the thought of a
futilefinding.
In her talk, her friends learn more about her past and the
massiveanguish and pain she experiences. Ruhua shocks them after disclosing that she slipped sleeping pills in the wine for Zhenbang. In a sense, she wanted to kill him for fear he didn't die leaving her alone in the
underworld. Could love be this strong? Should I see Ruhua as a cruel cold-blooded woman or a faithful lover? Maybe both. Finally, they learn that Zhenbang was revived in hospital shortly after he was found out
taking poison. He is still alive, a fact gives Ruhua more reason to see him again.
On the shooting scene of a movie, they find him, a beggar-like old man, lying on the
filthy floor. He seems like a dying old dog. Not a shred of the dashingly handsome, unattainable young master remains. Ruhua approaches him
calling his name. When he realizes what is
happening and tries to explain. She is gone already.
