Life and Love for the Environment
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1935 and raised in Victoria, Canada since the age of ten, Murio Takanashi
learned to love the natural
environment because of many nature trips he took with his family. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in
environmental
biology. After joining the workforce for a couple of years, Mr. Takanashi returned to finish a Master's degree in Environmental Economics at the University of Oxford in 1961. He then worked for various governments and corporations in studying their
environmental policies.
In 1966, Mr Takanashi returned to university to pursue his PhD in Environmental Economics, completing his studies in 1970. His dissertation, one of the first studies to analyze the role of government trade on natural resource use, helped to
define the field of
conservationeconomics.
Since then, Mr. Takanashi has had a strong voice in international
environmental circles. He
regularly appears at conferences on both economic and
environmental
policy. He has held important positions in the World Bank and the United Nations. He has been a
senior consultant to the governments of Japan, England, and the United States. He has also worked with important
environmental organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund. In 1985 he started his own company, Environmental Strategies, Inc., to consult to large multinational corporations on their
environmental strategies.
Mr. Takanashi currently chairs the United Nations Committee on the Environment. He has been awarded the United Nations Peace Award. His
environmental service has been recognized by many organizations. Mr. Takanashi's work has had a large
impact on how many organizations approach their
environmental policies.
Mr. Takanashi and his wife Katherine have four children. They have lived in Honolulu, Hawaii since 1993.
