Liverpool's Momo Sissoko has had to stay in Lisbon after hospital treatment for an eye injury suffered in Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League loss to Benfica.

Sissoko took a kick in the face following a high challenge by midfielder Beto on the half-hour and went off on a stretcher. Beto was booked and Sissoko was replaced by Dietmar Hamann.

After hospital tests the Mali midfielder was told he would not be flying home to Merseyside with the rest of the squad on Tuesday night and would have to remain Lisbon.

"It is a serious eye injury which means Momo will be staying in hospital overnight for observation and further tests," a Liverpool spokesman said on the club's website.

"The club doctor and one of the physios is staying in Portugal with the player until he is able to return to England."

Liverpool lost the match after Brazilian Luisao headed the only goal six minutes from time at the Stadium of Light. The second leg of the round of 16 game is on March 8 at Anfield.
