The steps of teaching:
The First Period
Procedur:
The teacher will use this period to study the subjunctive mood.
The subjunctive mood is used to express a wish or expecta lion that someting may ormay not happen. Usually it is not true. The subjunctive is always used in a conditionalclause. Then the teacher will say something about subjunctive used in conditional clausesand main clauses.
1. 表示与现在事实相反,谓语动词的主要形式如下:

The past tense of verb(We use “were”instead of be.)
Would(should,could,might)+origi-nal verd
(1) If I were you, I shouldn' t do that.
(2) If we had time, I would go with you.
(3) If we were here, we could ask him.
(4) If I knew his telephone number, I would ring him up.
(5) If they were here now, they could (might) help us,
With the pronoun I and he both singular number you would expect a singular verb,am, is, was. "Were" is generally only used for plural. But in the sentences just given toyou, "were" is not plural, but subjunctive. That on construction is practically the only ex-ample. We have in modem English of the subjunctive mood expressed by the form of theverb.

(1) If he had seen you yesterday, he would have asked about it.
(2) If you had come earlier, you would (might) have met him.
(3) I should have called you if I had known your telephone number.
3.表示与将来事实可能相反,谓语动词主要形式如下:

The past forms of verb should or were to+orig-inal verb
Would(should,could,might)+original verb
(1) If I saw him tomorrow, I should ask him about it.
(2) If it were to rain, the crops would grow better.
(3) If I were (should be) asked to go, I would certainly go.
(4) If it were to snow tomorrow, they would not go out.
But sometimes the tense of conditionalclause and main clause are not the same. This kind of sentences are called sentences of mixed condition.
(1) "if I had missed", said William Tell, "and had shot too low, I was going to use this arrow on you".
(2) If it had not been for me, you would not be free.
(3) If you had spoken to him yesterday, you would know what to do now.
Sometimes the subjunctive is expressed by prepositional phrases.
They would not be able to live without him.

The arrangement of teaching:
1. Read the new words of the first paragraph then write some special words on the-blackboard and make sentences with them.
2. Work on the first paragraph and explain the language points.
(1) Although Princeton, New Jersey, has a worldfamous university, it is still a small quiet town.
新泽西州普林斯顿虽然有一所世界闻名的大学,但却仍然是一个安静的小城镇。
If we use "although" (or though) in first sentence, we can' t use "but" in second-sentence. This is different with our custom.
a world- famous university 是指 Princeton University

(2) It is not a place where anyone would expect to see strange characters on thestreet.
The pattern "it is" always used in front of a sentence for emphasis.
would 是情态动词,意思是“会”。
(3) She suddenly saw a funny - looking man coming toward her.
"Coming" is a present participle and it modifies "man".
funny: causing fun or amusement; a funny story
