Type of lesson: Speaking
Teaching aims:
1. Help Ss describe the advantages and disadvantages of something by using specific words and structures.
2. To improve Ss’ speaking ability.
3. Encourage Ss to learn more knowledge of science.
Teaching important and difficult point:
To learn to cooperate with partners to analyze a problem in different views and how to express their opinions.
Teaching aids: Multi-media computer, some handout and tape recorder.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Warming up
1. Show a cell phone to the Ss and ask them some questions.
Q1: What’s this?
Q2: Do you think it is new?
Q3: Did we use it ten years ago?
T: Cel lphone is a kind of thing people have invented in these years. So we call cell phone a kind of new invention.
2. Show a picture of the maglev train to the Ss.
T: I know a new kind of train has been invented. Do you know the name of the train?
3. Enjoy another picture of maglev train.
Step 2: Pre-speaking
1. Listen to the tape and try to understand the dialogue.
T: There are two speakers in this dialogue.
Q1: Do they have the same opinion?
Q2: What does the man think of the maglev train?
Q3: What does the woman think of the maglev train?
2. Ask Ss to read the dialogue by themselves and try to get the answer.
3. Ask Ss to read the dialogue aloud with their partners and try to find out the advantages and disadvantages of maglev train.

4. T: The two speakers have the different opinions on the maglev train. When they express their opinions, what do they say? (Ask Ss to pick out the expression in the dialogue.)

5. From the dialogue, you know the two speakers’ opinions on maglev train. What do you think of this new train? (Ask Ss to use the expressions.)

6. Ask Ss to find out some words which are used to describe the maglev train.
7. Match the two columns: Which item should the group of words belong to?

8. Look at the useful expressions on P23 and try to put the sentences into proper places.

Step 4: While--speaking
1. Show one picture of each topic and ask Ss to guess the name of each kind of new technology.
2. Divide the class into four groups. Each group chooses a topic among cloning, nuclear energy, computer and space flights.
3. Ss work in pairs to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of their topic with one picture.
4. Ask Ss to express their opinions.
Step 5: Post-speaking
A debate
Topic: “Should students use cellphones in the school?”
1. Choose four Ss to be the judges.
2. Divide the whole class into two groups.
3. Give Ss 5 minutes to prepare for the debate.
4. Debate
Period 1: Free talk.
