reading and
writing practice using the target language.
Call attention to the survey. Ask a different student to read each line of the survey. Say, This
survey shows how often Green High School student exercise how often they do homework and so forth. Talk with several different students about the activity survey. Say, What activity do ninety-five percent of Green High students do every day? Look for ninety-five percent on the chart. Guide students to respond, Do homework. Say, That's right. Ninety-five percent of students do homework every day. Tell me something else about the chart.
Review the information in the green box with students. Read the definitions and percentages to students and answer any question they may have. Say, Most students means more than half. Some students means less than half.
Point out the magazine article. Read it to the class
saying blank every time you come to a blank line. Say, Now look at the
survey and fill in the blanks in the article.
Point out the
sample answer. Say, The answer is most because more than half of the students exercise three or four times a week. Point to the part of the
survey that shows what percent of students exercise three or four times a week.
Ask students to finish the activity individually.
Check the answers.

4 This activity gives students listening and
speaking practice using the target language.
Ask students what they can do to improve their English. Elicit a few examples (eg. read English books) and write them on the board. Ask a few students, how often do you (the things on the board)? Elicit from the class which of the students you asked is the best English students.
Point out the left hand
column of the table. Say, Think of more things you can do to improve your English and write them here. As students work, move around the room
offering language support.
Draw the table with the given examples on the board. Ask students the questions and write their names in the
appropriate columns. Ask students to continue on their own. Ask them to ask several classmates each question. Move around the class
offering language support where necessary.
Ask a few students who they think is the best English student in the class. Why do they think that? What does that student do? How often does he or she do it?
Optional activity
Ask students to talk about how often their family members do things. For example, My mother cooks dinner every day. We eat in a
restaurant once a week. My father goes to the United States once a year As students give examples, ask other students about the same topic. Kirn's mother cooks dinner every day. Does your mother cook dinner every day?
