Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley lately has been making a fashion statement with a $20 black knit cap
bearing the name 'Obama' spelled out in sparkly stones.
'I bought it from a man on the street who was selling these out of the trunk of his car,' said Mr. Talley, who paired the sparkly cap with an understated gray suit at Oscar de la Renta's pre-fall show on Monday. 'I'm ordering more for Christmas gifts!' He noted that he's also ordering up an
overcoat with Barack Obama's face done in crystals across the back to wear to the presidential
inauguration.
A growing number of fashion and
accessory labels are
trying to cash in on the Obama
frenzy that has continued to build since the presidential election. Barackawear, a Los Angeles-based label that began selling 'Barack-the-Vote' tee-shirts in August 2007, recently introduced new $24 tee-shirts with slogans such as 'Yes We Did' in order to cash in on post-election fervor.
This morning, Washington, D.C.-based
jeweler Ann Hand started selling a line of Obama-related
jewelry and accessories that include $45 silver dogtags that say 'First Pooch' and $175 sunglasses that feature the word 'Obama' in crystals on the side. Ms. Hand said she
normally does a candidate-themed pin during presidential election years but this is the first time that she's introducing a line of 10 items inspired by an incoming president. (Ms. Hand, who said she's an independent, noted that before she began selling the items today, she'd received 1,000 pre-orders for a $75 Obama pin she'd designed, some from countries like Spain and Singapore. In 2004, she said, she sold only about 800 George Bush pins over a nine-month period.)
Allen Adamson, managing director of branding firm Landor Associates, said Mr. Obama is the first U.S. president who's been a 'badge brand' since John F. Kennedy. The term refers to an item or image that people want to wear because 'if I put his name on me, it says, 'I'm cool.' Wearing something with Obama's name on it says 'I'm the next generation, I'm new, I'm about change,'' he added.
Mr. Adamson noted, however, that because of the flood of Obama fashion and other paraphernalia being rushed out before January's
inauguration, 'the market is going to reach saturation point very quickly I would say, within the next two to three weeks.' He predicted that the items that will sell the best are ones that shoppers can wear or use immediately, such as shirts, as opposed to collector's items like coins. 'People see this as a here-and-now thing, not like, 'If I buy this collector's coin right now, I'll put it under my
mattress and it'll be worth a fortune 10 years from now,'' he said. 'They want something that shows, 'I'm a part of this movement.''
