(Singing) The blue-faced Dou Er Dun steals a horse, the red-faced Lord Guan battles at Changsha, the yellow-faced Dian Wei, the white-faced Cao Cao, the black-faced Zhang Fei ....
YY: Haha, Sam, I can hear you singing from outside. What made you fall in love with this song "Story-telling and Singing with Lianpu"?
Sam: Lately I have been researching into Chinese Opera. I really love this particular piece.
YY: This piece that you just sang is about ancient China's personages dating back to the Three Kingdoms.
Sam: Right, but of those personages, I have only heard of Cao Cao because there is this
saying that goes, "Speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao arrives." [i.e. speak of the devil]
YY: Yep, Cao Cao was an
ambitious and
ruthless person, and he had a
reputation [for that.]
Sam: Yang Yang, can you tell me why these people are [painted] in so many different colors?
YY: Oh, what you're talking about is a major art in itself. In Chinese Opera, these colorful faces are known as lianpu [opera face-painting]. Different colors represent different meanings. For instance, blue color stands for someone who is
upright and outspoken, red color means one's
character is defined by
loyalty and righteousness, and white color symbolizes a
suspicious and
treacherous character.
Sam: I see. Looks like Chinese Opera is really vast and deep! Yang Yang, can you tell me more about Peking Opera.
YY: Peking Opera is one of the different kinds of opera that has been handed down in China. It is frequently seen as a representative of Chinese opera art form, and hence, it is also known as our "national opera." Peking Opera being a Chinese opera art form, is also an
outstanding representative of
traditional culture. It has also been included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Apart from
professional performers, there are many
ardent fans of Peking Opera and they are known as
amateur opera performers.
Sam: So, what are the classics in the repertoire of Peking Opera works and what about the performers?
YY: There are many classics in Peking Opera, for example, "Farewell My Concubine," "Madam White Snake," and "Lady General Mu Takes Command," all of which are classics which
everyone is familiar with and can repeat in detail. They are based on famous
historical accounts or adapted from folklore. Moreover, there has never been a
shortage of
renowned masters in Peking Opera. Take for example Mei Lanfang; he is the one
instrumental in disseminating the Peking Opera art form abroad. There are also two movies in China, "Farewell, My Concubine" and "Forever Enthralled", both of which are stories about Chinese Opera performers.
Sam: Having heard what you have just said, I really must go watch the Chinese Opera, and have a stint as an
amateur opera performer.
