San Francisco BART – an acronym for Bay Area Rapid Transit – is a local train system that connects many parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Some call it Bay Area Subway train as well. It is the best bet for reaching the major cities in the north of Bay Area. If you want to travel some cities around Bay, you can take BART or Caltrain (another commuter train to the South Bay cities of Silicon Valley). In outer parts of San Francisco BART runs mostly on elevated track; in downtown it runs in a subway. There are five different BART lines which are complicated. Therefore, frequently, even Americans get onto a wrong train or get off at a wrong stop. If you have a chance to experience it, you may know how hard it is. Fares for San Francisco BART are structured around a mileage-based formula – the farther you go on BART, the more you will have to pay. Before boarding you should determine how to purchase your ticket. It's difficult to find the train you want to ride. Don't board at random even when you find the exact platform or stop. Make sure you board the right one because some stops and platforms serve multiple lines.
There are many terminals for BART in San Francisco. If you know nothing about BART, you'd better take a look at your route map first. You should not only know where to get off, but also the terminal of the line.
The MUNI is the most important network of local transport in San Francisco. Just as buses in Beijing, the MUNI buses go to every corner of San Francisco. The MUNI fare is US$1.5, a cheap price in the United States. Tickets are sold on the bus. Board bus through the front door, pay your money to the driver and get your ticket. But the best deal going has got to be the Muni Passport, it grants unlimited travel on all Muni vehicles for a consecutive period, just like a monthly commuter ticket in China.
The MUNI drivers do not always stop at each stop. You must pull the signal cord to alert the driver before your desired stop. The stop-request cord is located along the top of the window on each side of the bus.
There is no ticket conductor on bus, so passengers must pull the signal cord to let driver open the rear door when you get to the stop.
The urban railroad car is also called a streetcar. Streetcar lines are identified by a letter. Some of them pass through the central part of the city on the rail embedded into the streets.
The well-known cable car in San Francisco was invented by a Scottish engineer in 1873. From the first run on August 1, 1873 to the present, it has served the citizens of San Francisco and has become a symbol of the city. Tourists enjoy the single carriage cable car most, because of its old-fashioned style. Its route is short and straight, starts at Powell and ends up at Fisherman's Wharf, running along many famous tourist attractions. Because the cable car tickets are mainly targeted at tourists, the fares have been recently raised to US$5 per one-way ride.
Muni buses, identified by a number, offer rush-hour Express and Limited service on select lines. Late night Owl Service (from about 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.) is provided on a limited number of lines.
In San Francisco, renting a bike is as expensive as taking a taxi. So you'd better travel by public transportation, unless you like riding a bike enough to justify the cost.
