Kinder Garten
Kinder Garten comes from German, which means "a paradise for children".
At present, kindergartens are developing at a rapid pace in China. Different kindergartens can be found everywhere throughout the country as a manifestation of the flourishing preschool education to which the whole society has paid utmost attention.
Different kindergartens have different structures and follow different educational concepts. Some carry on the traditional pattern of nurseries, focusing on after-school care with educating as the supplementary function. While, some lay emphasis on bringing children's potential into full play and training their skills. For example, some kindergartens have offered lessons as piano, dance, and English. At present, the Montessori's educationalphilosophy becomes most prevalent. Generally, kindergartens in China tend to divide children into three classes according to their age – senior, middle and junior.
My children once attended a Chinese kindergarten for a short time, but for the most of their childhood, they were nursed in German kindergartens. Therefore, I get to know the kindergartens in both countries well. Personally, I'm inclined to the educational mode in Germany from where I believe my children can benefit more.
German kindergarten teachers believe that it is most important to allow the children to "play" so the teachers can seize the opportunity to better instruct them. The teacher is only an observer and assistant. Children must be given freedom to have their nature manifested fully. Such concept has been demonstrated obviously in German kindergartens, whose priority is to cultivate the children's independence and social adaptability, in a way of letting them play.
My daughter spent her childhood in a Catholic kindergarten while my son went to a Christian one. There is no much difference between the two and what is taught in classes have little relation to religion. Both kindergartens divide children into different classes – Sunflower Class, Little Elephant Class, Fish Nemo Class, Deer Bambi Class, and Moon-Star Class, etc. Parents will receive a letter on their children's first preschool day, which tells them how their children will spend the following three years in their kindergartens. When children graduate, they will be given a big notebook recording every progress they made in the past three years there: their first drawings, some funny origami work or jigsaw puzzles, their photos, and introductions of the activities they have taken part in. The teacher keeps a thick diary for each child, depicting various stories about the kids and with all kinds of photos shot as they were crying, with tooth dropped out, showing a curious face and so on. From these diaries, parents can see how much effort the teacher has made for their children.
